In a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, darker brows were found to make a person look younger, since we seem to (subconsciously) associate defined contrasts in facial features with youth. That makes sense, considering eyebrows do tend to lighten with age.
All kinds of body hairs change colour when ageing hair follicles stop producing the pigment melanin that makes hair dark. Eyebrow hairs also change texture, grow bushier and longer with age. Their different structure may explain their different rate of greying.
While upkeep may be more frequent due to fading color, henna is the best option if you are looking for a 100% natural way to darken your eyebrows, as even vegetable-based dyes contain some chemicals, Garcia explains. Avoid over-cleansing around the eyebrow area to keep henna from fading too fast.
Whatever your reasons are for wanting darker eyebrows, it is easy to get them. You can use makeup for a quick and temporary fix, you can dye your brows for a more permanent option, or you can try using home remedies to darken your eyebrows naturally.
“As we get older, the natural aging process thins the hairs on our bodies,” says Tonya Crooks, a celebrity brow expert and founder of The BrowGal. Consequently, sparse eyebrows are a sign of that aspect of the aging process—just like the thinning of hair on your head. Thicker eyebrows can make you look more youthful.
Natural blondes who have fair hairs can feel free to deepen the shade of their arches, she says, adding that darker brows will act as a frame for the face and enhance your eye color. “Generally, it will give you the appearance of a lot more brow. It can really revolutionize your look,” agrees Lee.
The problem is the age we age; many of us find our eyebrows get a lighter, a lot thinner, and even turn gray. Years of waxing, threading and tweezing away those little hairs also make our once full, nicely arched brows lose their shape.
YOUR BROWS SHOULD BE DARKER
We hate to break it to you, but if you thought that your brows should perfectly match your hair, you might want to think again. In fact, your eyebrows should actually be darker than your hair color—unless your tresses are pitch black.
You'll need a concealer (or highlighter), a powder, and a lighter-shade brow pencil than you typically use. “Use concealer to block out the brows so you can visualize what you would look like with little-to-no brow,” he says.
Elena thinks the proper age for brow grooming depends on the method. For plucking, the aesthetician recommends waiting until 20 to avoid accidental overtweezing. For waxing, she recommends waiting until at least 14, the year skin sensitivity starts to drop off.
"As we age, it's completely normal for our hair, including eyebrows and lashes, to thin," says Audrianna Mora, the Global Education Manager of RevitaLash Cosmetics. Over time, skin loses its elasticity, causing hair follicles to become brittle and fall out.
Eyebrow hair loss causes. If one or both eyebrows are thinning, it could be due to infection, skin conditions, hormonal changes, or an overactive immune system. Nutritional deficiencies, physical trauma, or emotional stress can also cause diminishing brows .
Don't stress out, eyebrow tint will fade over the first week from the natural oils in your skin and also from cleansing your face. However, if you still aren't happy with the color after a week, there are some things you can do to remove the tint.
Honey also has lightening properties. Applying a layer of honey to your eyebrows and then allowing it to dry naturally can also help lighten them. This is because honey has small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Henna has been used as a natural dye for eons now.
An eyebrow tint is a semi-permanent treatment, so it will fade with time. It works in the same way as a semi-permanent hair dye, requiring reapplication once your colour loses its initial vibrancy.
With the above in mind when considering whether your eyebrows should be lighter or darker, I'd suggest the main rule of thumb is… “…to have your brows similar to your hair colour! You can't go wrong! If you wish to go for a slightly different colour, I'd recommend only 1-2 shades darker or lighter!”
If you're not exposed to the sun for a while, it will all be normal. You can also simply deal with the genetics of your body, which change the colour of your face hair (and so also your eyebrows). This can happen when you get older and nothing to worry about.
Reason 1 – Your diet is lacking. As with your lashes, aging hair follicles can lead to eyebrow hair looking thinner and sparser. But perhaps even more importantly, just as with hair loss at the scalp, a nutritional deficiency can cause hair volume to go by the wayside.
“While it depends on many factors, including the tweezers you use, how often you pluck and how traumatic it is for your hair, you won't be stuck with thin eyebrows forever,” says dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD. “Most of the time, they grow back.”
Long face To camouflage a long face, your brow shape should ideally be flat (a slightly downward curve would also work). This makes a long face look shorter and more proportionate. Round face High-arch eyebrows are best suited for this face shape. Avoid rounded brows.
Study shows women with thick eyebrows may be more attractive to men. Women typically tweeze and wax their eyebrows, but a 2019 study conducted by two Oakland professors found that men are more attracted to women with thicker eyebrows.
"Men's eyebrows tend to continue to grow larger until older age (and this also applies to ear and nose hair)," Del Campo said. "In women, there are lower levels of testosterone."
Increase Vitamin E
While there are no direct studies that correlate vitamin E and increased melanin, some studies show it can help against sun damage. Even if there isn't a 100% chance it can help with your greying eyebrows, vitamin E is still a great vitamin that offers other benefits.
