Yes, it is possible to wear a hairpiece following hair transplantation surgery to help camouflage the effects of the surgery until all wound healing has occurred.
You can wear a wig or camouflaging products 7 days afterward and color your hair 15 days after the procedure. Your stitches should be removed 2 weeks post-procedure, and we will help you schedule your appointment. You may experience postoperative shock loss that may arise 4 to 6 weeks after a procedure.
But experts suggest that you should wait for 7 to 10 days before you start to wear anything over the scalp. Damaging the grafts could create empty patches on the scalp and damage the entire recovery of the hair transplant process. After 7 to 10 days, wearing a hat is considered safe.
There are certain things that should be avoided during these few days as they provide a risk post hair transplant, such as swimming, drinking alcohol, smoking, high-impact exercise and more. It is also crucial you keep your scalp well hydrated during this period with regular saline sprays.

After 14 days the grafts are completely secure in their new location. Patients following the initial two weeks can confidently return to their normal hair care routine, to wearing hats and standing under power showers.

Shedding of hair grafts after a hair transplant can be noticed anywhere between 1-5 weeks after the hair transplant procedure. Patients are often alarmed by the continued loss of hair, however, a few months after the procedure; they can be assured that new hairs will eventually grow back again.
If you drink tea or ice tea, usually with less caffeine, it still is prudent to avoid them if possible on the day of surgery. Coffee and caffeine-containing products may be resumed the very next day after surgery.
The Surgery
FUT involves taking a strip of healthy hair from a donor site – usually the back of the head – and separating these hairs to re-insert in to the area of concern. When a hair transplant is administered expertly, no one should know you have had the surgery.
A bandage will be applied to the donor area for 24 hours, and you should be careful not to touch the grafts in the first 2 weeks. By day 5, the hair grafts should be secure enough for you to wash your hair gently without touching it by hand.
The hairs are very delicate and any minimal contact on the scalp can dislodge them. For this reason, we advise all patients to take a rest for 5 days following their transplant. This can extend to 10-11 days if 5 days are taken off in between 2 weekends.
It is possible for a graft to fall out after a transplant, but this is extremely uncommon. If it happens, it usually only occurs within the first day or two after the procedure, and it is accompanied by some bleeding.
The graft sites will form scabs in 24 to 72 hours after surgery, and the scabs fall off in 3-10 days. As the scabs fall off, you may notice that hair is shed with them. THIS IS NORMAL. Do not pick or scratch the scabs, doing so can cause infection and endanger the survival of the grafts.
Precautions After Hair Transplant Surgery
For several weeks after the hair transplantation, the newly transplanted hairs are in an incredibly fragile state. Avoid exposing your implanted hair to direct sunlight for the first two weeks after your hair transplant.
Immediately after surgery, the area where the doctor worked is going to look slightly red, shiny, and swollen. If you look closely, you will also see thousands of new little hairs standing up where the follicular unit grafts were implanted.
Some transplanted hair will fall out in the weeks following treatment but should regrow properly afterward. New follicles eventually re-grow stronger and thicker than before. Results continue to improve over time, and patients typically see full growth within 12 months. The thickness should match the surrounding hair.
