You should absolutely moisturize your skin even if you have active acne. It's an absolute myth that moisturizing your face will worsen your acne. In fact, moisturizers are necessary to keep acne-prone skin as relaxed as possible.
If you've got oily, acne-prone skin, you might be thinking that you don't need moisturizer. Not so, though — moisturizer can actually help save your skin from a whole host of skin woes. According to famed esthetician Renee Rouleau, skipping moisturizer can cause breakouts, rather than the reverse.

"Giving your skin a break is one of the best things you can do," she says. "More oxygen will be delivered to your face, and your skin will have more time to repair itself and regenerate its elastin and collagen." Breaks from your skin care can also be really useful if your complexion has been acting up.
Why can dry skin cause acne? Since the clogging of hair follicles causes acne, dry skin can cause an excess buildup of dead skin cells. This, in turn, can clog your pores. In addition, dry skin makes your pores more likely to break open, allowing acne causing bacteria deeper into the skin.
So by stopping moisturising, this actually stimulates cell turnover and encourages natural desquamation (that's the shedding of the outer layers of the skin). This improves skin function and exposes the tightly packed plump fresh cells to effectively reflect light and leave the skin glowing.

Stage 4: Severe acne

Given the increase in oil production, she says your skin will usually look greasier and slightly more inflamed. Zeichner adds that stress acne can also look like a combination of blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps, and pus pimples.
“If you pop the pimple, it becomes a micro-wound,” explains Kazin. At this point, it's best to apply a little antibiotic ointment like Neosporin ($6, drugstore.com) at night to help speed up healing. Not blocking the pores helps fight acne, but it has nothing to do with breathing.
