Physical insults such as prolonged exertion and immobilization are established causes for rhabdomyolysis. However, only one previously published report has implicated massage therapy, in which an elderly man developed rhabdomyolysis after a 120-minute massage by two therapists.
This biological evidence suggests that massage-induced increases in myotubes could grant viral particles increased access to 2,3 and α2,6-linked sialic acid receptors, thereby aiding infectivity and potential exacerbation of influenza-induced rhabdomyolysis.
Muscle aches and fatigue is common after a deep tissue massage. The movement of muscle fibres causes stimulation that can often result in pain. If your pain lasts more than a few days, then consult your physician. Headaches and migraines after a Deep Tissue Massage are not uncommon.

In rare cases, deep tissue massage can lead to nerve damage. This usually happens when too much pressure is applied near a nerve or when a nerve is compressed for an extended period. If you experience numbness, tingling, or sharp pain during your massage, speak up right away.

High levels of CK-MM enzymes are most likely from damage to your skeletal muscles. The damage may be from disease, sudden injury, certain medicines, or recent intense exercise. High levels of CK-MB enzymes are most likely from damage to your heart muscle.
Part of what toxins are released after massage, creatinine levels decrease as the blood flow increases, reducing stress on the kidneys, which require adequate blood flow to help filter waste products and remove excess fluids.
Deep tissue massage can leave the body feeling sore for a few days after the massage. It is important to drink plenty of water and rest to help the body recover. Soft tissue massage does not typically cause soreness, and recovery time is minimal.
An endurance athlete: Marathon runners, people who take spin classes and others who do high-intensity interval exercises have a higher risk of getting rhabdomyolysis. Occasional endurance activities don't cause this condition. Your risk increases if you push yourself too hard without resting.
As we have already determined, massage does not release, remove, or flush toxins from the body, therefore it cannot make clients sick. However, deep tissue and sports massage is known to sometimes cause flu-like symptoms. This is called Post Massage Soreness & Malaise (PMSM), and symptoms tend to include: Pain.
Rhabdomyolysis can be life-threatening. Seek medical attention urgently if you develop muscle swelling or weakness, and your urine becomes dark in colour like tea, especially if you have been doing a high level of resistance training.
What about mild rhabdo? Can massage cause mild, non-emergency rhabdo? Almost certainly, it turns out. 5 In fact, if you get a strong enough massage, it can even — almost — cause severe rhabdo.
Cimetidine is a common cause of a falsely elevated creatinine test, according to a 2012 review of related research. Cimetidine can increase the level of creatinine by about 15% in people who have normal kidney function. Creatinine levels will usually return to normal when someone stops taking it.
Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney disease. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. But also heart disease and obesity can contribute to the damage that causes kidneys to fail. Urinary tract issues and inflammation in different parts of the kidney can also lead to long-term functional decline.
In adults, the available data show that the most common causes of rhabdomyolysis are drug or alcohol abuse, medicinal drug use, trauma, NMS, and immobility.
However, our case demonstrated that macromolecules could falsely elevate CK-MB mass concentration, persisting for a minimum of four weeks. It is particularly important to distinguish macro-CK from CK-MB to avoid unnecessary invasive procedures in patients with symptoms mimicking acute coronary syndrome.
Once high suspicion of rhabdomyolysis is clinically suspected, diagnosis is mainly based on serum CK levels. Serum CK levels at the presentation of rhabdomyolysis are usually at least five times the upper limit of normal, ranging from 1,500 to 100,000 U/L with levels peaking in 24 to 72 h.
Total contraindications are such things as unstable hypertension or high blood pressure, contagious diseases such as the cold or flu, a significant fever, and/or recent surgery. As a massage therapist, we also learned about endangerment sites.
The types of structures that are vulnerable in an area of caution may include arteries, veins, nerves, bursae, lymph nodes or vessels, or small and fragile bones. Examples of areas of caution for massage include the popliteal space behind the knee, the anterior cervical region, and the axillary region.
Blood testing is not recommended after massage therapy, reflexotherapy or physiotherapy. Women's hormones fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and these fluctuations can influence the results of hormonal testing.
