The Rule of Thirds: Top To Bottom Lip Ratio
Whether you want dramatic volume or an enhanced but natural-looking appearance, Kellie recommends following the rule of thirds. That is, the top lip should be 1/3 of your total lips and your bottom lip 2/3, but it will also depend on your natural shape.
It's a common misconception that dermal filler is going to dramatically change your appearance with the very first treatment. In actual fact, 1ml of dermal filler is just enough to create a very subtle result that clients can then build upon over time (if that's your goal).
We typically advise our clients to have around 1ml in their first lip injection session and building on that with 1ml every six months. What are the advantages of lip filler? Lip fillers help create volume and symmetry. They are ideal for people with thin lips or whose lips are uneven.
The average treatment will require just 0.5 to 1 ml of filler to achieve the desired effects, so you are unlikely to need more than one syringe of dermal filler. In some cases, a little more filler may be used to achieve a more dramatic look, but it would rarely require more than 2ml (or 2 syringes) of filler.
With a few millilitres of dermal filler placed strategically, it can rejuvenate your entire appearance. Most people only need 1mL of dermal filler to enhance their whole face. The amount of filler injected will be different for every person, depending on the area they're trying to treat.
1ml is a relatively small volume of filler, and it will typically produce results that last for six months.
You can expect some swelling in your lips after the procedure. You may also notice some small red spots where the needles were injected into your lips. Bruising around the lips is another common side effect, which may last about a week.
I would always recommend at least 6 months between injection of different fillers. After we have established the above, the same rationale as mentioned in point 1 would apply here. Fillers usually last around 6-12 months.
One syringe of filler you can expect slightly plumper lips with a smoother appearance. We use fillers like Restylane and Juvederm to create natural looking and feeling lips enhancement. Two syringes of dermal filler will get clients noticeably smoother and plumper and for some clients a true volume change.
Bad lip fillers will be easily noticeable, and this is why the treatment has become synonymous with unnatural-looking results. 'Good' lip filler results aren't that detectable, because they look so natural!
The upper lip should be slightly larger than the lower lip with a gentle curve that peaks at what's called cupid's bow. The hinge of the upper lip comes in the form of the central philtrum that separates the two sides. Your upper teeth should also overlap the lower teeth by one millimeter.
When the upper lip is equal to or begins to exceed the volume of the lower, the augmentation starts to look fake. Once that ratio is breached, the result degrades rapidly, even with minor volume additions.
1ml of filler gives a very subtle soft enhancement, 2mls gives a more volumized look for some and a ducky look for others depending on type of filler injected.
1cc of Restylane in the lips is often enough for many patients. For patients like yourself looking for more volume I often use two syringes and often times I'll Restylane Lyft or Voluma. The syringes are only 1cc which is not a lot of volume. A teaspoon is 5cc's.
