Powder blushes tend to last longer than cream blushes. Because of their texture and formulation, you can apply your powder blush in the morning and still feel like you've got a good flush of blush going into the night.
When it comes to an elaborate or professional makeup look, powder wins every time. It stays in place and allows you or your makeup artist more precision in application. However, for a natural or summer look, cream blush is your best bet. It's light, doesn't feel heavy and looks great over BB cream.
Blush can fade quickly for so many reasons. If you don't prepare your skin correctly for makeup, use the wrong blush formula, or apply it on bare skin, your blush may come off quickly during the day. Keep reading for our top tips on how to make your blush stay put.
Cream blush is often touted for looking more natural than it's powder and gel counterparts but sadly, it can often fade faster than a Tinder connection.
Liquid blush often lasts much longer, blends more easily into your skin, can be built up slowly, and offers a hydrated flush that won't dry out your complexion. Powder blush can appear dull or matte, which can be counter-productive when trying to have a natural and youthful look.
Richly pigmented for long-lasting wear, Charlotte Tilbury's two-step application blush will brighten any complexion. The shades are buildable so you can adjust the color suit your look.
Yet using cream blushes (or any blush for that matter) isn't going to be the only cause of acne and breakouts. If you want to avoid breakouts and irritations when it comes to blush, non-comedogenic cream blushes are the best choice to use on a daily basis.
"Normal to dry skins are best with a cream blush. Oily skin and skin with large pores should go sparingly with cream blushes as they can get into the pores and can cause the color to go on unevenly, making the pores more obvious."
If you are applying powder after your makeup, always wait until after your cream blush for the smoothest application. This way you can set your blush if you have oilier skin, and you can see exactly where you need the powder to blot any excess oiliness for a truly airbrushed finish.
After you've applied your cream blush, you can go in and add highlighter or bronzer, or both if that's what you fancy. I'm applying Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Palette here that can be used on top of cream products, to give some extra radiance and glow to the skin.
7. Add blush for subtle dimension — especially if you're not a fan of bronzer. "Blush can also be used to create contour and shape the face," notes Eisdell. "Even if the photo is black and white, with blush on your cheekbones, you'll still have the look of definition.
So, if you are looking for a highlighter that makes your skin glow from within, you should go for a liquid highlighter. If you want to add more of a dramatic glow effect, you should go for a powdered one, whereas for a subtle look, try adding a cream highlighter to your list!
“When using a blush to instantly look more refreshed (and younger), try using a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks,” says celebrity makeup artist Amber Amos. “Choose a rosy or coral tone (depending on your undertones), and simply tap onto your cheeks.”
For normal to oily skin: Go with a powder formula, like Nars Blush. It will last longer than a cream blush, which can migrate and fade. For oily skin: A gel (which can be hard to blend on drier skin) stays put.
It's selling out quick ?
Over on TikTok, cult product that 'celebrity makeup artists swear by', Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush, has been hailed as Kylie's favourite blush.
Liquid blushes are sold under a variety of names such as creams, gels, tints and stains. The only real difference between these forms are the carriers used to deliver the colorant. Creams tend to use humectants or silicones to deliver the colorants while gels, tints and stains are often water based.
Although traditional powder blushers are still a must-have, liquid blushers have recently made a real impression on the beauty world. With a fresh, dewy finish, liquid blushers look so natural and blend seamlessly into the skin for a delicate, soft finish.
You can use powder formulas on top of liquids and creams to set them in place — but try to avoid using liquids and creams over powder. Using powder on top of liquid or cream formulas is A-OK — but make sure you let the liquid set first and blot away excess product before you go in with powder, says Barose.
If you're wearing a liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer, or BB cream don't add powder blush directly on top. Use a cream blush instead, or stick with powder but set your base first with a setting powder. If you skip this step, the color may end up patchy and cause the rest of your makeup to shift.
